GAA Names Aquaterra® as Innovation of the Year Finalist

Nuseed’s Aquaterra® Omega-3 oil is a finalist for the Global Aquaculture Alliance Innovation of the Year award, in recognition of its potential to double the world’s supply of omega-3, an important nutrient for fish and human health.

Nuseed developed Aquaterra as a partial replacement for marine ingredients. While plant-based protein alternatives to fish meal have been available for years, a market accessible alternative to fish oil has been out of reach.

Aquaterra is the world’s first land-based source of long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, produced by Nuseed to deliver the nutritional benefits of microalgae via its proprietary Omega-3 Canola.

“While Nuseed is honored, we credit this recognition to global scientific and industry collaboration,” says Benita Boettner, Global General Manager Nuseed Nutritional.

Nuseed partnered with scientific and industry leaders at all stages of product development. The biotechnology, for example, was developed in collaboration with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC).

Independent trials conducted by the Norwegian Institute of Food, Fisheries and Aquaculture Research (NOFIMA) demonstrated its safety, performance, and quality parameters.

The aquaculture industry has shown incredible support and interest in Aquaterra. Leading feed innovators Skretting, BioMar and Salmofood have tested the performance of the oil through extensive feeding trials.

World recognized salmon producers, including AquaChile and Multiexport, piloted it at a commercial scale on BAP certified sites. The results surpassed expectations and indicated Aquaterra improves fish health and welfare.
