Nuseed Carinata development program expands to Brazil
Following three seasons of production between primary crops in Argentina for low-carbon biofuel feedstock, the Nuseed Carinata dedicated research and development sustainable production program has expanded to Brazil. The first crop trials were planted early December 2021 in the states of Santa Catarina, Paraná, Minas Gerais, Goiás and Distrito Federal.
Luiz Carlos leads market and product development for Nuseed Brazil, he is responsible for the research and development of the first Nuseed Carinata trials in the country and provided the following insights into the program’s development.
When were they started and what is the current status of the Carinata trials in Brazil?
We planted the first Nuseed Carinata trials in Brazil on December first in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais and right after, on December third in Acreúna, Goiás. In February, with the help of Embrapa Agroenergia, we started trials in Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. We are testing optimal management of the crop, including best planting time, spacing, population, yield potential and agronomic performance.
Nuseed Carinata is a completely new cover crop in Brazil, what are the regulatory requirements?
In compliance with MAPA, Brazil’s Ministry of Agriculture, requirements, we started the VCU (value, cultivation and use) process at the same time as the first seasons, so that the culture can be registered with the MAPA.
Considering trial progress, when do you believe Nuseed Carinata sales will start in Brazil?
Our mission and the program’s main objective is to ensure Nuseed Carinata is grown in a sustainable and innovative way in Brazil. We are working so that by 2024 we will offer Nuseed Carinata as a new hybrid offering in Brazil’s seed portfolio.
