March 2023 Canola Seed Supply Update

Update for canola growers

It feels like harvest hasn’t long finished but sowing is already starting in some regions, so we would like to share an update on the availability of Nuseed varieties. We have also included some additional information we hope you find useful.

If you have any questions about your Nuseed canola varieties, or anything else canola related, please contact your local Nuseed Area Sales Manager

Hybrid canola seed still available

We currently have some seed of the following high-performing canola varieties still available to order for planting this year:

Seed may sell out so please contact your seed supplier to place an order as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about which Nuseed variety is best-suited to your growing conditions please contact your agronomist or your local Nuseed Area Sales Manager.

An update on seed delivery

At this stage we are on track to have 80% of orders dispatched to stores by the end of March and 100% by mid-April. Our supply chain team is working hard with our processing and logistics partners to treat, pack and deliver your seed as quickly as possible.

We’re very pleased to report that the improvements we introduced this season, such as additional processors and direct shipments to WA, have resulted in earlier deliveries to stores in many instances.

If you have any queries about the status of your Nuseed order please contact your supplier.

HyTTec Velocity: when is the best time to sow?

HyTTec Velocity is a new release for 2023 which is an early maturing line and the fastest hybrid in the HyTTec family.

For growers in Eastern Australia, to help you determine the best time to sow HyTTec Velocity in your region our Market Development Team has put together a tech note to guide you.

How we develop better canola varieties for you

We develop all our new canola varieties at our Australian Innovation Centre in Horsham, Victoria. It’s here that our specialist breeding team use leading-edge technology to develop new crosses from our extensive germplasm library to find the best new canola varieties for Australian growers.

Each new variety we release has 6-8 years of testing and trialling behind it, starting with thousands of possible options.

We have created one of our very popular animations to explain the process so please take a minute to learn more.

Thank you to EPR growers

If you grew one of our canola varieties with an End Point Royalty (EPR) in 2022 we want to thank you for making accurate declarations at delivery.

Nuseed has four HyTTec varieties and five OP TT varieties that are subject to an EPR of $5 per tonne (ex GST) at harvest.

The EPR program helps support investment into the development of new varieties like HyTTec Velocity and ATR Swordfish with higher yields and oil performance, greater disease resistance, and superior quality for Australian growers.

For more information on the EPR program please visit our EPR page.

Storage of seed bags prior to sowing

In our last update we shared our guidelines on best practices for storing your seed on farm before sowing, to ensure the quality of your seed is maintained.

This information has been very popular with growers so we’re sharing it again here in case you missed it.

Some key guidelines include

  • Store your seed bags in an area where they will be dry and cool.
  • Ensure your seed is kept away from external heat sources or hot building walls.
  • Store seed away from chemicals, especially herbicides.
  • Keep your seed bags away from direct sunlight, dark storage is preferred.
  • Store your seed bags off the ground’s surface, eg on pallets.
  • Use an area that is pest and insect free or use suitable baiting.
